The American Jane Hudson, a single, middle-aged secretary, travels to Europe for the first time to fulfil a long-cherished dream and take a holiday in Venice. She stays at the cosy family boarding house of Signora Fiorini. At first she feels a little lonely in the romantic surroundings, but then she befriends the smart ragamuffin Mauro, who shows her around the city. During her wanderings, she meets the antique dealer Renato, who persistently courts her. After overcoming her initial mistrust, 40-year-old Jane gives herself over completely to the intoxication of infatuation in beautiful Venice. She spends an enchanting time full of romantic moments. But then it turns out that Renato is married and has children.
